Stress manifests in so many different ways that it is sometimes really challenging to find the source of stress, especially if you are being bombarded by several things at one time. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and to feel like everything is going to fall apart if you don’t keep it together.
Stress is defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. In layman’s terms, its that feeling of not being able to remain in control of any situation because there is just too much going on. Once stress creeps into one aspect of your life, it becomes contagious and it spreads between the various things you are juggling before you have time to come up for air and what ends up happening is you end up chasing your tail and not actually getting anywhere.
If you’re an adult in today’s society it means you have at least 3 to 4 areas to consider. You could be handling financial stress, a relationship. kids and work or you could be dealing with infertility, financial issues, extended family issues and work, or you could be a single parent juggling kids, work and financial worries, or you could be building a business and coping with financial strain, relationship and family. There are so many different ways that the pieces of this stress bomb come together, financial pressure is huge for a lot of people and tends to be one of the root causes of stress regardless of their socioeconomic standing.
Stress can be even more life altering if you suffer from depression or anxiety as it can be a very real trigger into despair and that sliding slope so many of us are familiar with. When stress becomes overpowering its like a fog descends and you can’t quite see the solutions that are normally so obvious, this is a defence mechanism, fight or flight if you will. Your conscious mind is protecting you from the strain being put on you by pushing it into the shadows but this is the opposite of what we need to be doing.
We need to break our stress triggers down into manageable chunks and figure out what kind of learner you are;
- Visual (spatial):You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding.
- Aural (auditory-musical): You prefer using sound and music.
- Verbal (linguistic): You prefer using words, both in speech and writing.
- Physical (kinesthetic): You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch.
- Logical (mathematical): You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems.
- Social (interpersonal): You prefer to learn in groups or with other people.
- Solitary (intrapersonal): You prefer to work alone and use self-study.
You can read more about each learning style here, understanding how you learn and thus understand will really help you to manage your own stress because this will dictate how you find your solutions.
For example, if you are a visual learner you may find it helpful to create a mind map of your areas of concern and once you can see it in front of you it will be easier to establish what needs to be done in which areas to help lighten the load and solutions may become clearer.
Breaking down the stress cloud into segments in your learning style will help you feel in control of your situation and put you in a stronger position to cope with stress and most issues you may have crop up in your life. There are coping strategies out there to help and the internet is a great resource. You can master your stress, even when it feels like its got you by the short and curlies 😉
